Why am I in the ICU?
You are either:
1) really sick;
2) you might become really sick, or;
3) you need a special procedure or medication that can only be done safely in the ICU (in which case you are either 1 or 2 anyway)
What is so special about the ICU?
The ICU has 3 distinct features: advanced monitoring (including for vital signs, physical exam changes), advanced expertise (including specially trained nurses and physicians), and special procedures (like advanced IV medications and devices).
